Cozumel Island residents were surprised recently when internet communications island-wide experienced an outage, disabling most cellular phones and internet connections.  Telmex land-lines were unaffected.  While the outage was brief, the Secretary of Public Security was required to issue a statement, since 911 calls – from cellular phones – were interrupted as well. Subsequent service was restored, repairs were made, and Cozumel as we know it resumed operations, however, many people started to question just where and how an island receives internet signals.

Cozumel receives much of it’s power and communications from a submarine cable that connects the island of Cozumel to the Yucatan Peninsula which is currently 15 years into it’s projected 30 year lifespan. In fact, these types of submarine cables are extremely common, and considered to be cheaper and faster than satellite communications.Originally installed back in 1999, the undersea cable consists of  7 wires with 2 circuits.   It’s projected that the cable is using approximately 50% of it’s 25-30 MVA capacity, or 13 – 14  MVA (Mega Volt Amperes).
