Last week, in a Municipal bulletin, it was announced that a beach recovery project for the downtown area is slated to begin in as little as 3 months. Years ago, Cozumel had a lively downtown beach area, similar to that of Playa del Carmen, just mere steps from the island’s ferry pier. It’s been in the works for some time to restore the area since it has been negatively impacted by storms and strong currents. The project entails installing 33,000 cubic meters of sand from the Muelle Fiscal to Playa Las Casitas. The sand will be relocated from the northern end of the island. The recuperation is a joint project with Cinestav (Centro de Investigaciones y Estudios Avanzados del Politécnico Nacional ), Zofemat (Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre) as well as the Municipal Department of Public Works. Permission has already been granted on the State and Federal level.
