After three years of construction, on December 15, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador inaugurated the first section of the Mayan Train. The most emblematic project of his management. Its purpose is to reactivate the economy and tourism in the Mexican southeast. However, the service’s debut was not without setbacks.
The inaugurated section includes a route that covers 473 kilometers of a total of 1,554 kilometers from the city of Campeche to the Cancun Airport. The official start of operations was on Saturday, December 16. Despite expectations, the first day of the trip was marked by operational and technical failures and significant delays.
The train, nicknamed ‘Xiimbal’, registered delays of up to five hours on its journey between Cancun and Campeche, causing frustration among many of the passengers. Unscheduled stops occurred in Teya, Yucatán, and Leona Vicario, Quintana Roo. These stops were due to technical problems and delays on the reverse journey.
Many users were enthusiastic about being the first to travel. And others didn’t have the same opinion all the time. They reported incidents such as that the air conditioning failed, it does not have windows that open, nor curtains to cover the Sun on the way, other users reported the high costs to get to the Mayan train stations since they are not in an easily accessible area. .
In addition to the cost of the ticket -1,166 pesos (69 USD) in Turista class or 1,862 pesos (110 USD) in Premier class–, the transfer costs to and from the stations must be added, as well as food and drink expenses on board. of the train. These additional costs almost double the initial fare at the end of the trip. The Mexican president assures that rates will undergo adjustments to make costs more accessible to residents of the region.
Users reported costs between 700 pesos (41 USD) and 1,200 pesos (71 USD) to get to the Mayan train station in Cancun, which is located behind the airport.
The staff of the Maya Train company attributed the delays to configuration issues and pointed to the company Alstom, supplier of the rolling equipment, as responsible for the failures. To compensate, passengers received complimentary tickets and t-shirts with the train’s logo.
Despite the inconveniences, trips from Campeche to Cancun and vice versa had a high demand for seats, which were 100% sold.
The Cafeteria menu also generated criticism from passengers who pointed out prices considered “very high” and several inconsistencies in the menu. Foods, which are not included in the ticket cost, are offered individually or in combos. But the prices of these combos turned out to be more expensive than buying the food separately.
Despite the initial challenges, President López Obrador confirmed that a new section of the Mayan Train will open on December 31, from Cancún to Palenque, adding several stations to the route. The complete operation of the Mayan Train, which will run from Cancun Airport to Centenario, is scheduled for February 2024, according to information from the president.

Después de tres años de construcción, el pasado 15 de diciembre el presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador inauguró el primer tramo del Tren Maya. El proyecto más emblemático de su gestión. Su finalidad es reactivar la economía y el turismo en el sureste mexicano. Sin embargo, el debut del servicio no estuvo exento de contratiempos.
El tramo inaugurado comprende una trayectoria, que abarca 473 kilómetros de un total de 1,554 kilómetros desde la ciudad de Campeche hasta el Aeropuerto de Cancún. El inicio operaciones oficial fue el sábado 16 de diciembre. A pesar de las expectativas, el primer día de viaje se vio marcado por fallas operativas, técnicas y demoras significativas.

Además del costo del boleto -1,166 pesos (69 USD) en clase Turista o 1,862 pesos (110 USD) en clase Premier–, se deben sumar los costos de traslado hacia y desde las estaciones, así como los gastos en comida y bebida a bordo del tren. Estos costos adicionales casi duplican la tarifa inicial al finalizar el viaje. El presidente mexicano asegura que las tarifas sufriran ajustes para que los costos sean mas accesibles para los residentes de la región.

El personal de la empresa del Tren Maya atribuyó las demoras a cuestiones de configuración y señaló a la empresa Alstom, proveedora del equipo rodante, como responsable de las fallas. Para compensar, los pasajeros recibieron boletos de cortesía y camisetas con el logo del tren.
A pesar de los inconvenientes, los viajes de Campeche a Cancún y viceversa tuvieron una alta demanda de asientos, los cuales estuvieron vendidos al 100%.
También el menú de la Cafetería generó críticas por parte de los pasajeros que señalaban precios considerados “muy altos” y varias inconsistencias en la carta. Los alimentos, que no están incluidos en el costo del boleto, se ofrecen individualmente o en combos. Pero los precios de dichos combos resultaban ser más caros que comprar los alimentos de forma separada.
A pesar de los desafíos iniciales, el presidente López Obrador confirmó que el próximo 31 de diciembre se abrirá un nuevo tramo del Tren Maya, de Cancún a Palenque, sumando varias estaciones a la ruta. La operación completa del Tren Maya, que abarcará desde el Aeropuerto de Cancún hasta Centenario, está programada para febrero de 2024, según la información del mandatario.
