On November 24 on the Island of Cozumel, a play will premiere in commemoration of November 25, the international day for the elimination of violence against women. The director is Kenya Rocha, who speaks to us for Cozumel4you about the theme of her work “The Letters on the Table” for which they have been rehearsing since July:
“When we talk about gender violence or violence against women. what is the image that comes?
Generally it is an image of a woman who has been very abused or on the verge of a high-impact crime. But it’s not like that.
There is a way to measure violence and it is with the violent meter that we become familiar with during this work or this theatrical laboratory.
That’s where the idea of how to capture these different forms or types of violence that are not so visible or evident and that we have also normalized arises.
So the intention is just to address those issues, that approach or that type of violence that seems like nothing is happening but there is a background and that can escalate to the levels that we know and that put Mexico in a place with very worrying statistics.”
Kenya Rocha studied Dramatic Literature and Theater. The area in which she considers herself strongest is acting. Lately she also wants to do work that stands out, especially in direction and production.
In May of this year, 2023, a theatrical production was carried out with the young people of the community, with a dynamic somewhat similar to the work that will be seen this weekend. Only now it will be addressed with adult women and themes adapted to the realities of that generation.
“It is a work due to the type of theme, it is aimed at young people after 15 years, preferably accompanied by an adult, they can also come alone, but it is a theme
a bit delicate and sensitive, there will not be violent scenes, although we talk about violence those types of scenes will not be included, but the information handled is sensitive.
All women who in some way remember or recognize that we have had this type of situation in our lives are invited to make them evident, make them visible, and also promote believing people when they are having an experience of this type so that they can take action. and seek support.
In the same way, it is a work for men, which is very important because it is also required to raise awareness about how we perceive, what we experience, and sometimes it is not obvious to them.”
On stage you can see the work of Dora Uribe, Blanca Santín, Laura Hoyo, Bertha Alicia Gutiérrez and Susana Sánchez and although some of the participants will not be present since they are from other cities, they will be in the montage.
Finally, it only remains to mention that “Las Cartas van sobre la Mesa” will be presented at the AMEXME offices on the ground floor of Plaza del Sol, local number 20, this weekend, November 24, 25 and 26, and on November 1, 2 and 3. December at 6 p.m., and Monday, December 4, they will have 2 performances at the Isla Maya promoter at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The donation is 150 pesos, which will be used to continue promoting theater projects on the island.

El próximo 24 de noviembre en la Isla de Cozumel se estrenará una obra teatral en conmemoración al 25 de noviembre, día internacional de la eliminación de la violencia contra la mujer. La directora es Kenya Rocha, quien nos habla para Cozumel4you sobre el tema de su obra “Las Cartas van sobre la Mesa” para la cual han venido ensayando desde el mes de Julio:
“Cuando se habla de violencia de género o violencia con la mujer. ¿cuál es la imagen que viene?
Generalmente es una imagen de una mujer muy maltratada o en el límite de un delito de alto impacto. Pero no es así.
Hay una manera de medir la violencia que justo es con el violentómetro que nos vamos nosotros familiarizando durante este trabajo o este laboratorio teatral.
De ahí es que surge la idea de cómo plasmar estas diferentes formas o tipos de violencia que no son tan visibles o tan evidentes y que también hemos normalizado.
Entonces la intención es justo tratar esos temas ese enfoque o ese tipo de violencia que parece que no sucede nada pero hay un trasfondo y que puede escalar a los niveles que conocemos y que ponen a México en un lugar con estadísticas muy preocupantes.”
Kenya Rocha estudió la carrera de Literatura Dramática y Teatro. El área en la que ella se considera más fuerte es la actuación. Últimamente también quiere realizar un trabajo que se destaque, sobre todo en la dirección y producción.
En Mayo del presente año 2023 se realizó un montaje teatral con los jóvenes de la comunidad, con una dinámica un poco parecida al trabajo que se verán este fin de semana. Solo que ahora se abordara con mujeres de edad adulta y temática adaptada a las realidades de dicha generación.
“Es una obra por el tipo de temática está dirigida a jóvenes después de 15 años de preferencia acompañados de un adulto, también pueden venir solos, pero es un tema
un poco delicado y sensible, no van a haber escenas violentas, aunque hablamos de violencia no se incluirán ese tipo de escenas, pero la información que se maneja es sensible.
Se invita a todas las mujeres que de alguna manera recordamos o reconocemos que hemos tenido este tipo de situaciones en nuestra vida, para hacerlas evidentes, visibilizarlas, también promover el creerle a la gente cuando está teniendo una experiencia de este tipo para que pueda tomar acciones y buscar apoyos.
De igual manera es una obra para hombres eso es muy importante porque también es requerido justo el sensibilizar como percibimos, qué es lo que vivimos y también a veces para ellos no es evidente.”
En escena se podrá apreciar el trabajo de Dora Uribe, Blanca Santín, Laura Hoyo, Bertha Alicia Gutiérrez y Susana Sánchez y aunque no estarán presente algunas de las participantes ya que son de otras ciudades, si estarán dentro del montaje.
Por último solo queda mencionar que “Las Cartas van sobre la Mesa”, se presentará en las oficinas de AMEXME en planta baja de Plaza del Sol local número 20 este fin de semana 24, 25 y 26 de noviembre y el 1, 2 y 3 de diciembre en los horarios de 6 de la tarde, y Lunes 4 de diciembre tendrán 2 funciones en promotora Isla Maya a las 6 de la tarde y 8 de la noche. El donativo es de 150 pesos, el cual se utilizará para seguir impulsando proyectos teatrales en la isla.
