SeaWalls Artivisim Project: 3 Artists Profiled
Editors Note: Laurie Carter has been an avid fan of all of the SeaWalls murals. She’s gone above and beyond and has kindly taken the time to meet most of the artists, speak with them, and photograph their art as it takes place.
This island just got even more beautiful, thanks to last week’s 2019 SeaWalls: Artists for Oceans Urban Art Festival-Cozumel. This public art event is the Pangeased Foundation’s most effective tool to spread the message that our oceans are in peril, and conservation efforts are required of all of us. The festival, classified as ARTivism, brings artists together from around the world, and was last held in Cozumel in 2015. Some of the 2015 murals were replaced during this event, but several still exist, including some from our local artists. Many local artists were prominently featured in this year’s event. Each piece showcases the artists’ incredible talents and passion for our oceans.
Three of our amazing (and internationally exhibited and renowned) local artists are: Veronica Ochoa, Draya Madú and Grafiteik Cultura Calle Crew. These artists all currently live in Cozumel, and their projects projects are all located close to each other.
Veronica and Draya’s works are both on the corner of Rafael Melgar and Calle 10 North, on the walls of the former Diamond’s International building.
Veronica’s project is on the North side of this very tall building, facing Calle 10 North; Draya’s is on the West side of the same building, facing Rafael Melgar. Grafiteik Cultura Calle Crew’s mural is on Calle 10 North, on the opposite side of the street and just East of Veronica’s piece, on a long low wall. The three works are made from different mediums and in different styles.
Veronica’s piece is mixed media, utilizing every day throw-away plastic items that are contributing heavily to the pollution of our oceans. It is an extremely creative, brightly-colored, 3-D piece that is a beauty to behold in person. Veronica would like us to know that reducing our consumption of items packaged in disposable plastics, recycling plastics whenever possible, and keeping the rest out of the oceans is something we all can, and indeed must, do. Stopping the volume of discarded plastics entering the ocean is in all of our hands. Veronica has worked with SeaWalls/Pangeased Foundation since 2015 as part of a collective to ensure that our local artists are heavily represented and prominently featured during the Cozumel SeaWalls 2019 event. Draya’s piece is done in vinyl and acrylic paint and features a vibrant, life-like Cozumel splendid toad fish, one of the island’s endemic species. She hopes to increase the recognition and awareness of this elusive fish, which is found only in Cozumel. Draya likes to incorporate depictions of children into her artwork, to represent love, innocence and hope. Her 2019 SeaWalls masterpiece is no exception. A beautiful child with a fishing hook is there to represent the damage that humans cause to the ecosystem, even if sometimes innocently.
She hopes that we all will become more aware of the negative impact many human activities have on our natural resources, and take personal measures to mitigate them. Rash guard instead of sunscreen, anyone? Along with Veronica, Draya was part of the local artists’ collective that created a piece here in Cozumel for the SeaWalls event in 2015. Grafiteik Cultura Calle Crew used primarily special aerosol spray paints to create their arresting seascape featuring beautiful, vibrant colors and plenty of wildlife. Specific tips or nozzles were used to create different effects. The “crew” is a collective of highly talented local artists including Teik, Slow mo Taeer and Wskz Ivan.
Teik says the message they would like to send with their artwork is that we all have to take care of Mother Nature, or “Pachamama”, because we depend on the earth and its ecosystems to nourish and sustain us. We are part of the ecosystem. Like Veronica, Teik would like us to know that the responsibility to care for the Earth is in each and every one of our hands. Our power is in the positive environmentally friendly choices we make, and in before the actions we take every day.
These positive actions create ripples in society and can influence more people to join the effort. This crew’s impressive results are well worth a look. Watching these guys work was amazing. If you are in town, seeing the newly finished SeaWalls projects in person is a must. Viewing these three is easy, given their proximity to each other. To view: Start on Calle 10 North and 5th, walk towards the water. The Cultura Calle Crew’s piece will be on your right. Continue towards the water, and Veronica’s mixed media piece will be on your left on the corner. Draya’s piece is on the same building, but facing Rafael Melgar. Be sure to cross the street to view the entirety of these two ladies’ artwork. The late afternoon light makes for ultimate viewing conditions; as does walking, so don’t plan on just driving by. Be prepared to be amazed!
The Pangeased Foundation and these local artists hope that you feel an emotional connection to this purpose-driven, community based art, and that you take positive personal actions for our oceans and environment. Each one of us has the capability to be more ecologically aware, and to live more sustainably. Enjoy this exhibition of ARTivisim, whether through pictures or in person. Tres de nuestros increíbles (e internacionalmente exhibidos y reconocidos) artistas locales, son: Verónica Ochoa, Draya Madú y Grafitek Cultura Calle Crew. Todos estos artistas viven en Cozumel y sus proyectos se encuentran muy cerca entre sí. Las obras de Verónica y de Draya están en la esquina de Rafael Melgar y Calle 10 norte, en los muros del inmueble que fuera Diamond’s International. El proyecto de Verónica se encuentra en el costado norte de este alto edificio, frente a la calle 10 norte. El de Draya en el lado oriental frente a la Rafael Melgar. El mural de Grafitek Cultura Calle Crew está en un muro largo sobre la calle 10 norte, frente y justo al occidente de la pieza de Verónica. Estas tres obras están hechas a través de distintos medios y estilos.
La obra de Verónica tiene medios mixtos, utilizando artículos de plástico desechado de uso diario que en gran medida contribuyen a la contaminación de nuestros océanos. Es una obra en 3D sumamente creativa y en colores brillantes que es una belleza contemplar en persona. A Verónica le gustaría que redujéramos el consumo de artículos envasados en plásticos desechables, reciclar plástico siempre que nos sea posible, y mantener el resto fuera de los océanos es algo que todos podemos y que indudablemente debemos hacer. Algo que sí está en nuestras manos es frenar el volumen de plásticos que se desechan en el océano. Verónica ha trabajado con la fundación SeaWalls/Pangeasead desde el 2015 como parte del colectivo para asegurarse de que nuestros artistas locales están muy bien representados y que destaquen visiblemente durante el evento Cozumel Sea Walls 2019. Las hermosas e innovadoras obras de Verónica han aparecido en otros sitios en la Isla y alrededor del mundo. Pueden ver más acerca de su trabajo, búsquenla alrededor de la ciudad y en Instagram.
La pieza de Draya está elaborada en vinil y pintura acrílica mostrando un pejesapo cozumeleño espléndido, vibrante y muy real; esta es una especie endémica de la Isla. Espera aumentar el reconocimiento y la sensibilización hacia este escurridizo pez al cual sólo se le encuentra en Cozumel. A Draya le gusta integrar en sus obras imágenes de niños representando el amor, inocencia y esperanza. Su obra maestra en Cozumel Sea Walls 2019 no es una excepción. Un hermoso niño con un anzuelo representa el daño que los humanos causan al ecosistema, no obstante que en ocasiones sea de manera inocente. Ella espera que todos podamos tomar conciencia del impacto negativo que tienen muchas actividades humanas sobre nuestros recursos naturales, y tomar medidas personales para mitigarlas.
¿Alguien quiere camiseta de protección solar en lugar de protector solar? Junto con Verónica, Draya fue parte del colectivo de artistas locales que crearon una obra en Cozumel para el evento Sea Walls 2015. Grafitek Cultura Calle Crew uso principalmente pinturas especiales en aerosol para crear su impresionante paisaje marino con hermosos colores vibrantes y mucha vida silvestre. Para crear distintos efectos, se utilizaron puntas o boquillas especiales. El “crew” [equipo] es un colectivo de artistas locales muy talentosos que incluyen a Teik, Slow mo y Wskz Ivan. Teik declara que el mensaje que quieren dar con su obra de arte es que todos debemos cuidar a la Madre Naturaleza o Pachamama pues dependemos de la tierra y sus ecosistemas para nuestra nutrición y sustento.
Somos parte del ecosistema. Al igual que Verónica, a Teik quiere que sepamos que la responsabilidad para cuidar de la Tierra está en manos de cada uno de nosotros. Nuestro poder estriba en las elecciones positivas y respetuosas hacia el medio ambiente que cotidianamente hacemos así como las acciones que realizamos. Estas acciones positivas crean efectos de onda en la sociedad y pueden influir de manera que más personas se unan al esfuerzo. Bien vale la pena ver los impresionantes resultados de este equipo. Si se encuentra en la ciudad, es necesario ver en persona las obras Sea Walls recién terminadas. Dada su proximidad entre sí, es fácil ver a estos tres. Para verlos, comience en la calle 10 norte con 5ª, camine dirigiéndose hacia el mar. La obra de Cultura Calle Crew está a su mano derecha. Continúe caminando hacia el mar y a su mano izquierda, en la esquina, verá la obra de mezcla de medios de Verónica. La obra de Draya se encuentra en el mismo edificio, pero viendo hacia Rafael Melgar. Asegúrese de cruzar la calle para ver las obras de estas dos damas en su totalidad. La luz del atardecer proporciona la máxima experiencia visual de la misma manera que lo es caminar, así que no haga planes para pasar por ahí conduciendo un vehículo. ¡Prepárese para asombrarse!
La Fundación Pangeasead y estos artistas locales esperan que usted sienta una conexión emocional con este arte comunitario con causa, y que tome acciones personales y positivas hacia nuestros océanos y el medio ambiente. Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan. Convenciendo a sus padres que pagaran una elegante universidad privada, obtuvo su título en Periodismo y Laura crea semanalmente Cozumel 4You, medios sociales y artículos promocionales sobre la Isla y también es moderadora en el grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook que actualmente cuenta con 25,000 miembros. Fabián, s umuy tolerante marido, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, pues se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
