The history of the state located in the eastern part of the Yucatan peninsula, starts in 1902 when the Territory of Quintana Roo was created. It owes its name to Andres Quintana Roo a politician, writer, poet and journalist also signatory in the Mexican Declaration of Independence. The region of Quintana Roo used to be one of the most populated in the ancient Maya Empire. In 1931 the Territory was annexed to the states of Yucatan and Campeche.  By 1935 it became Federal Territory of Quintana Roo lead by its governor Rafael E. Melgar. On October 8, 1974, following a presidential bill Quintana Roo was born as a free and sovereign state becoming part of the now 32 states (formerly 31 and 1 Federal District) of the United Mexican States.

The Quintana Roo (pop. 1,501,562) together with the state of Baja California Sur (pop. 926, 652) are the youngest states in the Republic.
