Laura Wilkinson Chats About “Seeing” Their Building Process….
Back in November of last year, my husband, affectionately known as the Fabster, was coerced into writing a little bit about the building process we’re going through here in Cozumel, as we build for a second time.
Things have evolved and progressed somewhat since then, so it was agreed upon that this time, this update would come from me. When we last left off, we had just put the roof on and it felt like things were going at light speed with daily visible progress. Since then, it FEELS like things have slowed down, but that’s mostly because they’re doing things like smooth out the walls and run electrical and plumbing cables and tubes – things that aren’t dramatically visible.
For a long time, I couldn’t really “envision” what our apartments would look like. As Fabs mentioned in the previous article, we went with the same Engineer who built our home, and since that hasn’t fallen down or imploded in 10 years, I figured that I’d just let go and trust Luis Ledesma. Plus, I like the design of our home, and this time he got me even more excited about this interesting design he wanted to incorporate to make both spaces feel bigger and more open.
Our project consists of 2 one-bedroom apartments (stacked vertically) with a shared swimming pool. We’re 
intending on using them for short term rental. Since these two apartments now have taken shape, I’ve been working with Luh McDevitt at The Magic of Design. Not only is Luh a good friend, a fellow Admin on the Cozumel 4 You Facebook Group, but as an interior designer, she also has that vision gene that I apparently lack when it comes to seeing things that haven’t been built yet, and making expert suggestions as to what should be going into them. I have to say, she’s been a really good sport about it as well, since I don’t have the biggest budget on the island, and she’s been able to work within my means and still give me several options.
The first thing we did was name the Cozumel Apartments: Mar and Sol. Obviously Mar would be the ground floor unit and Sol would be the upstairs. Since they’re different from each other, Mar is on the first floor next to the pool and Sol has a slightly larger size and will have a full size oven/fridge, we wanted them to have different décor as well.
Our first step was to choose color palettes: a Caribbean blue for Mar and a nice warm Mexican red for Sol. This has really helped me “see” the apartments, so I can start choosing wall colors, bistro tables, nightstands and the plethora of other items that go along with creating a fully furnished space, down to the blender and margarita salt.
According to Luis, the apartments should be ready by March, and since he was fairly accurate the last time, we’re hoping to have them up and ready for rent in April. In the meantime, I’ve spoken to Greg Dietrich, who owns Galeria Azul. Over the years, I’ve collected some great Cozumel art, and while I still love it, I’ve been looking at it for over 10 years now, so I’m intending to move a lot of it over to the apartments, so that local artists can be represented, and guests can really get a feel for the island’s art community.
While our construction doesn’t have the sense of drama and action that it did when the walls were literally rising up from the ground, there’s a lot going on. I think the key toward doing this is to find great people who really know what they’re doing and hire or beg them to help you as much as possible. I also spend a fair amount of time chatting about the project with some great Cozumel friends so the Fabster and I can really see how we want this new step to go. As we actually get closer toward the design aspect I’m going to be asking people in the C4Y group for their input. As they say – it takes a village, or in this case an island.

Durante Noviembre del año anterior mi esposo, caroñosamente conocido como el Fabster, fue obligado a escribir un
poco sobre el proceso de construcción por el cual estamos pasando aquí en Cozumel en tanto construimos por segunda ocasión.
Desde ese entonces, las cosas han evolucionado y avanzado algo, por ello acordamos que en esta ocasión la actualización vendría de mi parte. Nos quedamos en que el techo ya había sido colocado y se sentía como si diariamente las cosas avanzaran visiblemente a la velocidad de la luz. Desde entonces se SIENTE como si las cosas fueran más lentas; y ello se debe más que nada a que están aplanando los muros y colocando los cables para la electricidad y la tubería. Las cosas no son tan dramáticamente visibles.
Durante largo tiempo no me era posible “vislumbrar” cómo se verían nuestros departamentos. Tal como Fabs indicó en el artículo anterior, acudimos al mismo ingeniero que construyó nuestra casa y como durante 10 años no se ha caído ni ha sufrido una implosión, supuse que lo dejaría pasar y confiaría en Luis Ledesma. Además, me gusta el diseño de nuestra casa, y en esta ocasión hizo que me emocionara aun más con el diseño interesante que él deseaba incorporar para hacer que ambos espacios se sintieran más grandes y fueran más abiertos.
Nuestro proyecto consta de 2 departamentos de una recámara (en forma vertical) con una piscina compartida. En virtud que estos dos departamentos ya tienen forma, he estado trabajando con Luh McDevitt de The Magic of Design. No sólo es Luh una buena amiga, una compañera administradora del grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook, sino también es diseñadora de interiores, tiene ese gen para la visión que, según parece, yo carezco, y da sugerencias expertas sobre lo que debe haber en los departamentos. Debo decir que también ha sido sumamente amable al respecto pues no tengo el mayor presupuesto en la Isla, y aún con los medios que le he proporcionado ha podido darme diversas opciones.
Lo primero que hice fue poner nombre a los Departamentos Cozumel (Cozumel Apartments) : Mar y Sol. Claramente Mar será la planta baja y Sol el primer piso. Ya que son distintos el uno del otro, en la planta bajamar se encuentra cerca de la piscina y Sol es un poco mayor en tamaño y contará con un horno/refrigerador completos, por ello también queríamos que la decoración fuera distinta.
Nuestro primer paso era elegir la paleta de colores: azul Caribe para Mar y un lindo y cálido color rojo mexicano para Sol. Esto verdaderamente me ayudo a “visualizar” los departamentos, entonces puedo comenzar a elegir los colores de los muros, mesa de bistró, mesitas de noche y un sinfín de otros artículos que acompañan la creación de un espacio totalmente amueblado, hasta la licuadora y la sal para las margaritas.
De acuerdo a Luis, los departamentos deben estar listos en Marzo, y ya que fue muy atinado la ultima ocasión, los tendremos listos para arrendar en Abril. Mientras tanto, platiqué con Greg Dietrich, propietario de Galería Azul. Durante varios años he coleccionado gran arte de Cozumel y, no obstante que aún lo amo, ya lo he visto durante 10 años por lo que pretendo mover muchas cosas a los departamentos para que se encuentren representados los artistas locales, y que los huéspedes realmente puedan conocer a la comunidad artística de la Isla.
Si bien nuestra construcción no tiene el mismo sentido dramático y acción que tuvo cuando los muros estaban siendo erguidos desde sus cimientos, están pasando muchas cosas. Creo que la clave para hacer esto es encontrar personas que realmente saben lo que hacen y que contratan o a quienes se les suplica que le ayuden lo más posible. También paso una buena parte del tiempo platicando sobre el proyecto con grandes amigos de Cozumel, de esta manera al Fabster y a mí nos es posible ver en realidad cómo queremos que sea este nuevo paso a seguir. Conforme nos acercamos al aspecto del diseño, voy a solicitar las opiniones de personas del grupo C4Y. Como dicen hace falta el apoyo de una aldea, o en este caso, una Isla.

Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan. Convenciendo a sus padres que pagaran una elegante universidad privada, obtuvo su título en Periodismo y Laura crea semanalmente Cozumel 4You, medios sociales y artículos promocionales sobre la Isla y también es moderadora en el grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook que actualmente cuenta con 25,000 miembros. Fabián, s umuy tolerante marido, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, pues se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
