During the closing press conference for the Cozumel Ironman 2016, Lic. Jamie Canabal, President of the Mexican Triathlon Association, announced that the 2017 Cozumel Ironman, and ITU 2017 had not been officially secured.  The current Ironman contract, which ended with this last event, was for 8 years. The deadline for a new contract between the international Ironman organization and the State Government was originally slated for December 15th, however an extension of the deadline was requested. Likewise, the ITU contract has a deadline for December 30th.

The President of the Mexican Triathlon Association went on to say that due to scheduling restraints he had not been able to secure a meeting with the State Director of Tourism, nor the Governor, Carlos Joaquin.  If an agreement, and the financing secured, this event will most assuredly go to another destination.

For her part, Cozumel’s President, Perla Tun Pech pledged to do her part to keep these important events here on-island.
