Cozumel Municipal Directors:  Biologist Sandra Dutton Ruiz

Cozumel Municipal Directors:  Biologist Sandra Dutton Ruiz

Director of Ecology & the Environment….….

Editors Note:  On October 1, 2018,  a new administration lead by Pedro Joaquin Delbouis assumed responsibility for the municipality of San Miguel, Cozumel.  Many of the new Directors have a deeply imbedded history with the island, as well as a commitment not only to see Cozumel thrive but protect it’s natural resources and rich culture as well.  We thought it would be interesting to share a quick interview with several of our island’s newest public servants.

Background:  Biologist Sandra Dutton Ruiz is the Director of Ecology and the Environment  She moved to Cozumel in 2005, when she had already finished her degree at UADY (a university in the Yucatan). When she first arrived it was turtle season and she worked that May – November as an unpaid volunteer for the FPMC turtle program.  After that, she was offered a position within the Centro de Conservación y Educación Ambiental which is also under the FPMC.  She spent 8 years there: overseeing a lot of scholastic and children’s programs, including the re-planting of the red mangroves in Punta Sur Park that were damaged by Hurricane Wilma.  She’s also worked as a Docent at two island schools.

Sandra is married to Rafael Chacon, who is also a biologist, and they have 2 lovely boys.

Cozumel’s Ecology & Environment Department:  The Ecology & Environment staff is large and varied, since their department covers a lot of areas.  There’s administration staff, inspectors, the turtle department,  and even a large staff of cleaners.

The Department helps and rescues hurt un-domesticated animals, oversees the clean-up and maintenance of empty lots throughout the island and even handles noise complaints.  Additionally they teach programs in the island’s schools to help children learn more about nature, ecology and even recycling.

The Cozumel Turtle season – laying and hatching – runs from May to November yearly. During this time there will be a call for a lot of volunteers as well as tours to help with the hatching when the time comes.

The Municipal Department Ecology & the Environment are located at the sunken cenote park on Av. 65 and C. 31.    Their office hours are  8 am – 3 pm Monday  – Friday.  Their phone number is  872 5795.

On Her Work as Director of Ecology:  In spite of the fact that the Department covers a lot of issues, Sandra really feels it’s important to focus on the island’s youth, and create educational programs for island kids.

Sandra’s Philosophy:  “Cozumel generates 90 tons of garbage a day. It’s important we learn how to recycle and manage this waste in a way that doesn’t hurt our island’s eco-structure”
