COZUMEL, September. – After persistent complaints of extortion allegedly coming from inside the Center for Social Reintegration (CERESO) in Cozumel, authorities from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the Military Garrison as well as the penitentiary, carried out a law enforcement operation finding a cell phone chip, as well as sharp-end makeshift objects.

According to information, in recent security roundtables meetings, businessmen highlighted the problems experienced by other municipalities and locally due to extortion calls, affecting some people who have fallen for them, hence request the authorities intervention.

At the beginning of the week the Miguel Angel Matamoros, Undersecretary of Execution, Sentences and Measures of the Penitentiary System of Quintana Roo, headed the inspection inside the Center for Social Reintegration of the Island of Cozumel, located in the industrial zone at the end of Claudio Canto Avenue. At the site where more than a dozen vehicles of the Mexican Army, the National Guard, the State Attorney General (FGE), Ministry of the Navy (SEMAR), as well as the Quintana Roo Police.

It is to be noted that unlike other municipalities where the media is allowed in to take pictures for the news, more severe restrictions apply in Cozumel, so it was barely possible to show that the police went into the prison with tactical equipment -in case its use became necessary-, pointing out that the inspection lasted a little over an hour.

It was reported that an inmate nicknamed “El Chilango” (who was once part of the National Guard), currently incarcerated in the CERESO of Cozumel, is one whose name has been pointed out in social media as allegedly making extortion calls to the population, although the official information on this matter has not been released so far.

However, from the results of the law enforcement operation it was revealed that a cell phone chip was secured, but it is unknown if this object is the one that had been used for said extorsions or even how it was obtained, since no inmate can have such privileges.

Also relevant is that it had been over a year since this sort of inspections or searches were carried out periodically, while so far firearms and other objects being found as it happens in other neighboring municipalities, has never been made public.

COLLAGE INFORMATIVO
