A musical of Lies. “Un Musical de Mentiras” Cozumel

At a press conference held in recent days, a new theatrical proposal for the island of Cozumel was presented. A musical of lies, adaptation of the original work Mentiras: The Mexican musical, written and directed by José Manuel López Velarde.
The musical is put together as a great medley from the most successful songs from Mexico in the 80’s.
The story tells of Emmanuel who brings together, through a mysterious hooded figure, his four wives at his apparent wake, so that they can discover who among them took his life, recounting flashbacks from the 80s and songs of spite. His life stories and revealing that the four of them lived a simultaneous love affair with him.
In an interview for Cozumel 4 you, Manuel Alcocer, who directs and adapted the staging that will be presented in Cozumel, tells us:
“It is the story that many of us already know about Manuel who has played with 4 women, 2 wives and 2 lovers. In this adaptation a fifth woman comes, she is a new character who comes to change the meaning of the story a little, she comes to bring new songs to the work, songs that are iconic in the 80s era. Songs that gave great empowerment to women in music at that time. “Music that today is part of that compendium of themes that José Manuel rightly carries out together with a story that is interwoven precisely by those songs.”
Manuel Alcocer is committed to continuing to stage performances with the aim of giving Cozumel a cultural spotlight through theater.
“We are trying again to bring quality theater to the island. “We are trying to present a product that we believe people will really like and that will be well received, but above all that we believe will revive an era.”
There are 3 dates scheduled: Friday the 13th, Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th of October. Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and Sunday at 7 pm. The presentations will be at the Cozumel & Resort hotel.
We asked Manuel if the audience of foreign residents on the island can enjoy the work and this is what he told us:
“They do know part of our Mexican culture and part of what happened in the 80s in terms of music and they know a little of our language. Of course! It’s very funny.”
“Even a character became tropicalized, regionalized. One of them plays a Yucatecan, so it is something that we accept and love very much within the theater, because it gives it a lot of color, a lot of life, to put our own roots into the production.”

En conferencia de prensa que se realizó en días pasados se hizo la presentación de una nueva propuesta teatral para la isla de Cozumel. Un musical de mentiras, adaptación de la obra original Mentiras: El musical mexicano, escrito y dirigido por José Manuel López Velarde.
El musical esta armado como un gran popurrí a partir de las canciones más exitosas del México de la década de los 80’s.
La historia habla de Emmanuel quien reúne, a través de una misteriosa figura encapuchada, a sus cuatro mujeres en su aparente velorio, para que descubran quién entre ellas le quitó la vida, contándose entre flash-backs de los 80s y canciones de despecho. Sus historias de vida y revelando que las cuatro vivieron un amorío simultáneo con él.
En entrevista para Cozumel 4 you, Manuel Alcocer, quien dirige y adaptó la puesta en escena cque sera presentada en Cozumel, nos comenta:
“Es la historia que muchos ya conocemos de Manuel que a jugado con 4 mujeres, 2 esposas y 2 amantes. En esta adaptación viene una quinta mujer, es un nuevo personaje que viene a cambiar un poquito el sentido de la historia viene a traer nuevas canciones a la obra, canciones que son icónica en la época de los 80s. Canciones que dieron un alto empoderamiento en esa época a la mujer otra vez de la música. Música que hoy en día forma parte de ese compendio de temas que atinadamente José Manuel lleva a cabo conjunto a una historia que se entreteje precisamente por esas canciones.”
Manuel Alcocer apuesta a seguir realizando puestas en escena con la finalidad de darle a Cozumel un reflector cultural a través del teatro.
“Estamos tratando otra vez de traer teatro de calidad a la isla. Estamos tratando de presentar un producto que creemos que le va gustar muchísimo a la gente que va a ser bien recibido, pero sobre todo que creemos que va revivir una época.”
Se tienen programadas 3 fechas: viernes 13, sábado 14 y domingo 15, de Octubre. Viernes y sábado a las 8 de la noche y domingo a las 7pm. Las presentaciones serán en el hotel Cozumel & Resort.
Le preguntamos a Manuel si la audiencia de residentes extranjeros en la isla puede disfrutar de la obra y esto nos comentó:
“Si conocen parte de nuestra cultura mexicana y parte de lo que paso en los 80s en cuanto a la música y conocen un poco de nuestro idioma. ¡Claro que sí! es muy divertida.”
“Incluso un personaje se tropicalizó, se regionalizó. Una de ellas interpreta a una Yucateca entonces es algo que nosotros aceptamos y queremos mucho dentro del teatro, porque le da mucho color mucha vida poner nuestras propias raíces poner dentro del montaje”
