Recent catastrophes in Mexico City, Houston, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, among others, are a tragic reminder of the fragility of both life and the comforts of modern society.
For those of us who were around to experience Hurricane Wilma, it’s clear how quickly everything can be lost from one moment to the next.
In that sense, the horrific earthquakes and hurricanes that have affected so many millions of people in the region expose another vulnerability: what do we do when access to basic resources are limited, scarce or even unavailable?
Where do we look for food?
Luckily for us, we live on a beautiful island located to one of the world’s most bountiful food sources: the Mesoamerican Reef.
For centuries, the Caribbean Sea and the coral reefs have provided sustenance for generation after generation.
It’s only over the course of the last few decades that the convenience of mass fishing and large supermarkets are even accessible to large parts of the population.
Prior to that, a major part of the local diet was the result of the hard-working fishermen whose catch would feed an island.
Today, however, things have changed.
In fact, so much so that the large majority of people on the island get our fish, seafood, meat, and pretty much everything else from the supermarket chains such as Chedraui, Mega Commercial Mexicana, and Soriana.

All fine and good perhaps, but what happens when those sources of sustenance are suddenly no longer open or temporarily closed due to a natural disaster?
Learning to Survive
Normally, speaking of “humble beginnings” may seem like an exaggeration. In this case, however, it’s how it all started.
Spearfishing Today began about ten years ago and almost by accident.
A soon-to-be Flying Dutchman (that’s another story), in love with Cozumel Island, living a vagabond lifestyle and running low on funds, was out on his luck.
Prepared to make his journey back to the cold, wooden shoe-infested shores of Amsterdam, fate shone it’s light down upon our meandering man from a faraway land.
See, our friend Leo “Chanoc” Waltman had an acquaintance who invited him out to spearfish for the very first time.
Forget for a moment that he thought spearfishing was actually going deep sea fishing for billfish.
Soon thereafter, Leo began to head out on his own in search of lunch and a way to maybe even make a living.
Once out of the water, he would load up the hunted fish on his yellow tricycle and ride around selling the fish to local restaurants.
Then he took the next big step and began taking clients out with him and teaching them the magic art of catching their own food.
From Sea to Table
I think I once read somewhere about if you give a man a fish that you can feed him for a day but that if you teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
In essence, Spearfishing Today seeks to take our founding philosophy and transform that into a business practice that respects nature, our guests, and the island we call home.
Every time we go out on a spearfishing expedition, we only hunt what is in season and always eat what we catch.
If guests are with us and have the opportunity to prepare the fish themselves or have someone prepare it for them, then we’ll give it to them.
But what comes from the sea goes to the table.
There is no by-catch, there is no mass fishing, we never fish in the marine park, and only fish that are large enough to justify being hunted will be brought back up on the boat.
Moreover, it’s an intimate experience between the person doing the spearfishing, a.k.a. the spearo, and the sea.
Going down on just one breath, without any scuba gear, a spearo must conquer his or her skittish prey in order to bring that lunch back up to the table.
It’s skill, it’s luck, and it’s a big dose of having respect for magical underwater universe of the Caribbean Sea.

Las recientes catástrofes ocurridas en la Ciudad de México, Houston, las Islas Vírgenes y Puerto Rico, entre otras, son una trágica advertencia respecto a la fragilidad de la vida y las comodidades de la sociedad moderna.
A los que vivimos la experiencia del huracán Wilma nos queda claro cómo puede perderse todo de un momento a otro.
En ese sentido, los horrendos sismos y huracanes que han afectado a tantos millones de personas en la región, ponen al descubierto otra vulnerabilidad: ¿qué hacemos cuando el acceso a los recursos básicos es limitado, escaso o nulo?
¿Dónde encontrar alimento?
Tenemos la fortuna de vivir en una bella isla ubicada en uno de los sitios con mayor abundancia de alimentos: el arrecife mesoamericano.
Durante siglos, generación tras generación, el Mar Caribe y los arrecifes de coral han brindado sustento.
Tan sólo en el transcurso de las últimas décadas es cuando gran parte de la población ha gozado la ventajas de la pesca masiva y los grandes supermercados.

una isla.
Sin embargo, hoy día han cambiado las cosas.
De hecho, tanto así que la gran mayoría de las personas en la Isla conseguimos nuestro pescado, mariscos, carne y casi todo lo demás, a través de las cadenas de supermercados como Chedraui, Comercial Mexicana y Soriana.
Aprendiendo a sobrevivir.
Por lo general, hablar de “orígenes modestos” parecería una exageración. Sin embargo, en este caso, así comenzó todo.
Spearfishing Today inició hace casi diez años y casi por accidente.
A alguien que en poco tiempo se convertiría en un holandés errante (esa es otra historia), amante de Cozumel, viviendo como vagabundo y con escasos fondos, se le acababa la suerte.
La luz de la suerte resplandeció sobre nuestro vagabundo procedente de lejanas tierras, dispuesto a realizar su travesía de regreso a las costas frías e infestadas de zapatos de madera de Ámsterdam.
Nuestro amigo Leo “Chanoc” Waltman tenía un conocido que le invitó a practicar la pesca submarina, por primera ocasión.
Olviden por un momento que él suponía que la pesca submarina era pesca profunda de marlines.
Poco después, Leo comenzó a salir solo en busca de alimento y, posiblemente, una forma para ganarse la vida.
Una vez en el agua, sobre su triciclo color amarillo cargaba el pescado capturado y hacía un recorrido por los restaurantes locales vendiendo su pesca.
Luego decidió dar un gran paso y comenzó a llevar clientes, enseñándoles el arte de pescar su propio alimento.
Del Mar a la Mesa.
Creo haber leído en alguna ocasión que si le dan pescado a un hombre por un día, lo alimentas, pero si lo enseñas a pescar lo alimentarás por el resto de su vida.
En esencia, Spearfishing Today busca canalizar su filosofía fundamental transformándola en una práctica comercial que respete la naturaleza, a nuestros visitantes y a la Isla que llamamos hogar.
Cada vez que salimos a una expedición de pesca submarina, sólo pescamos lo que hay en la temporada y siempre lo comemos.
Si nos acompañan visitantes y tenemos la oportunidad de preparar el pescado o que alguien más lo haga, les entregamos la pesca.
Y lo que viene del mar, va a la mesa.
No hay captura incidental, no hay pesca en masa, nunca pescamos en el Parque Marino, y sólo subimos a la embarcación los peces que son suficientemente grandes para justificar su pesca.
Por otra parte, la experiencia entre la persona que realiza la pesca submarina, a quien también se le conoce como spearo, y el mar es algo intimo.
Para traer la comida a la mesa el spearo debe contener un solo aliento de respiración, bajar sin equipo de buceo y conquistar a su asustadiza presa.

Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan.
