For those of you unfamilar with the Spanish term “Canicula”  it refers to the hottest time of year.  Roughly translated into English as the “Dog Days of Summer” it generally begins a few weeks after the summer solstice (June 21)  and is the time when the midday sun is at its highest point in the horizon, sometime around the middle of July.  Sources vary regarding the actual dates but it generally starts from from July 3 – 14 and ends around August 15 – 30, although several reports have our State of Quintana Roo lasting well into September.

Where the Term Canicula Comes From

Colloquial phrases such as “this weather is so hot it’s not fit for a dog” have been attributed to the term Canicula (derived from Canine), however it’s generally agreed that  the term comes from Sirus, or what is commonly known as “The Dog Star,”  as this is the time of year when this star rises and is bright and visible in the night sky.  For more information on watching Sirus in the sky,  Space.com offers a quick read. What Causes Canicula’s Heat

Sirus “The Dog Star”

The cause of this extreme heat in our area doesn’t depend on the Earth’s distance from the Sun, but rather the inclination of the Earth’s access, which currently has the northern hemisphere pointed closer to the Sun. This period is characterized by reduced rainfall, extreme heat (average temperature in the State for this period is 37C/ 98F), and overcast, dark skies.    According to several sources Quintana Roo is one of several that is the hottest in the entire country, included with the Yucatan, Vera Cruz, and Chiapas.
