The Cozumel 2023 “Día de Muertos” Festival organized by the municipality of Cozumel was presented at a press conference. Cozumel4You presents you with all the information.
The official poster was revealed and the program of activities was announced. The festival will take place from October 28 to November 3, and will have the special participation of the “Mojiganga de Zacualpan de Amilpas” from the State of Morelos, in addition to a wide variety of cultural, artistic and sports activities.
The main objective of the event is to honor the memory of the deceased and encourage reunion with our loved ones. For seven days, from October 28 to November 3, Cozumel residents and visitors will be able to enjoy a wide range of events, including cultural, religious, artistic, gastronomic and sports activities, all designed to celebrate this holiday, with respect and joy.
The Director of General Events provided details about the festival program. On Saturday, October 28, it will begin with the lighting of candles and a parade of souls from the San Miguel pantheon to Benito Juárez park, where the official opening ceremony will take place.
Sunday, October 29, will be a day full of activity, with the “Carrera de las Ánimas 5K 2023” on Rafael E. Melgar Avenue, followed by the “Maleconeada.” That day the “Catrinas 2023 Youth Expression Contest” will also be held in Benito Juárez Park.
On October 30, the “Maleconeada” will continue in the afternoon, followed by the Exhibition and altar contest “The Return of the Dear” in Benito Juárez Park, as well as a cultural artistic program and the “Pinta tu Calavera” contest.
On October 31, in the same park, a multicultural event will be held that includes “Trick or Treat,” a “Children’s Costume Contest,” and presentations from the Cozumel Child Care Centers (CAI). The activity “Express Yourself Dancing on Halloween” will also be held.
On November 1, in Benito Juarez Park, the exhibition of the altar of the dead called “Offering for the Souls” will be held, followed by the
“Hanal Pixán Pib and Bread of the Dead Contest” and an artistic-cultural event.
November 2 will be dedicated to Catholic masses in the two cemeteries of the island, scheduled for 10:00 in the morning and 4:00 in the afternoon. Then, there will be a “Popular dance of catrinas and catrines” with a performance by local keyboardist Tony Graniel “El Dragón del Caribe.” The festival’s closing ceremony is scheduled for Friday, November 3, with a performance by an invited group.
The presentation of the festival took place at the Municipios Hall of Quintana Roo and featured the performance of the singer Aby Muñoz, who performed the song “La Llorona.” In addition to local representatives, carnival kings, youth ambassadors and other guests also attended.
It is important to mention that these events are only part of all the activities that can be found on the island in commemoration of the Day of the Dead. There are other organizations that also hold their own events year after year. The island’s schools often have different altar and rhyme contests called “calaveritas.” And of course the families who set up their altars in their homes, honor their deceased and pay them respect. Day of the Dead expressions can be found in any corner of the island of Cozumel and Mexico.

Se realizó la revelación del póster oficial y se dio a conocer el programa de actividades. El festival se llevará a cabo del 28 de octubre al 3 de noviembre, y contará con la participación especial de la “Mojiganga de Zacualpan de Amilpas” del Estado de Morelos, además de una amplia variedad de actividades culturales, artísticas y deportivas.
El evento tiene como objetivo principal honrar la memoria de los difuntos y fomentar el reencuentro con nuestros seres queridos. Durante siete días, desde el 28 de octubre hasta el 3 de noviembre, los habitantes de Cozumel y los visitantes podrán disfrutar de una amplia gama de eventos, que incluyen actividades culturales, religiosas, artísticas, gastronómicas y deportivas, todos diseñados para celebrar esta festividad con respeto y alegría.
El director de Eventos Generales proporcionó detalles sobre el programa del festival. El sábado 28 de octubre comenzará con el encendido de velas y un desfile de las ánimas desde el panteón San Miguel hasta el parque Benito Juárez, donde se realizará el acto de inauguración oficial.
El domingo 29 de octubre será un día lleno de actividad, con la “Carrera de las Ánimas 5K 2023” en la avenida Rafael E. Melgar, seguida por la “Maleconeada.” Ese día también se llevará a cabo el “Concurso de expresión juvenil Catrinas 2023” en el parque Benito Juárez.

El 31 de octubre, en el mismo parque, se celebrará un evento multicultural que incluye “Dulce o truco,” un “Concurso de disfraces infantil,” y presentaciones de los Centros de Atención Infantil de Cozumel (CAI). También se realizará la actividad “Exprésate Bailando en Halloween.”
El 1 de noviembre, en el parque sede, se llevará a cabo la exposición del altar de muertos llamado “Ofrenda para las Ánimas,” seguida del “Concurso de Pib y Pan de muerto Hanal Pixán” y un evento artístico-cultural.
El 2 de noviembre se destinará a las misas católicas en los dos panteones de la isla, programadas para las 10:00 de la mañana y las 4:00 de la tarde. Luego, habrá un “Baile popular de catrinas y catrines” con la actuación del tecladista local Tony Graniel “El Dragón del Caribe.” La ceremonia de clausura del festival está programada para el viernes 3 de noviembre, con la presentación de un grupo invitado.
La presentación del festival tuvo lugar en el Salón Municipios de Quintana Roo y contó con la actuación de la cantante Aby Muñoz, quien interpretó la canción “La Llorona.” Además de los representantes locales, también asistieron reyes del carnaval, embajadoras juveniles y otros invitados.
Es importante mencionar que estos eventos solo son una parte de todas las actividades que se pueden encontrar en la isla en conmemoración del día de muertos. Existen otras organizaciones que año tras año también realizan sus propios eventos. Las escuelas de la isla suelten tener diferentes concursos de altares y rimas llamadas “calaveritas”. Y por supuesto las familias que en sus casas ponen sus altares, honran a sus difuntos y les rinden respeto. Las expresiones de día de muertos pueden encontrarse en cualquier rincón de la isla de Cozumel y de México.
