Cozumel Ecology:  Pequeños Guardaparques

The “Pequeños Guardaparques” (or Junior Park Rangers in Engish)  was started by Biologist Rafael Chacon as a way to teach island children to be conscious of Cozumel’s very unique ecosystem and Cozumel_Ecology what they can do to protect it.  The children meet once a week, on Saturdays, and perform various activities including beach clean ups, swimming classes, assisting with the municipal turtle program, planting mangroves and other activities.  There are currently 80 children in total in the program, although not all of them participate in every activity.  The children that participate in the most activities will be awarded official “Guardaparque” status at the end of the program.

This is the first program of it’s kind here in Cozumel, and it’s a fantastic way to “pay it forward” and teach future generations about ecology and caring for their environment.  If you’d like to get involved, there are plenty of opportunities.  Even just transporting a load of children to and from an activity would be of assistance.  Rafael Chacon is always looking for new and interesting ideas and activities for his  “Pequeños Guardaparques” so if you have an activity or share a passion for something that you’d be interested in passing along, please get in touch by emailing  greenpez@gmail.com

The site is fantastic, Laura! Fantastic job. Every Thursday I get to feel as if I’ve had news from “home.” I appreciate that so very much.
