Cozumel Unscathed by Hurricane Delta:  Grateful Residents Await Tourism

Hurricane Delta made landfall in Cozumel on the early hours of Wednesday October 7th, 2020.  Cozumel was so fortunate that the storm not only lost speed but changed direction, and instead of hitting the island as a category 4 hurricane, we saw the effects 30 miles away from the center, and had heavy rains and intense winds.

Almost all of the island was without power, and many of the low lying areas, experienced intense flooding, and several trees came down due to the result of high winds.

Most of the island had electricity restored within a 24 hour period with many areas receiving power less than 12 hours, due, in part, to the very active hurricane preparedness committee – which held live meetings and provided information on social media.  The day after the hurricane utility crews joined residents and worked together to clean streets, restore utilities and order.

When questioned about the hurricane most residents expressed a profound relief that the island was not affected more by the effects of the storm.  Many island businesses actually opened on the evening of October 7th, and most restaurants had returned to full operation by the weekend.

Throughout the entire process Cozumel remained strong, unified and determined.  While still experiencing the effects of the pandemic and lack of cruise ships, residents worked together to protect their belongings and safeguard their neighbors.

Tourists who arrived at the start of this week have commented on how little the diving and the beaches have been affected by last week’s hurricane.  Sunny skies have helped dry up remaining landfall and most of the landscaping has been repaired.  Tourists who  are considering a winter visit, are being urged to  not postpone or change  travel plans based on last week’s hurricane, since, surprisingly, the damage was indeed minimal.
