Cozumel was lucky enough to host several Tall Ships in the last week.  The first ship to arrive was an important piece of US Coast Guard history last weekend when the Tall Ship “USCGC Eagle WIX-327″ called into port. The 78 year-old boat,  was originally launched by the German Navy in 1936 during WWII.  On Wednesday 5 other tall ships called into port only for one day.  The first to arrive was the ARM Cuauhtémoc, the Mexican Navy’s Tall Ship, which was built in Spain and launched in 1982.  The Venezuelan Navy’s Training Ship, the AB “Simon Bolivar” (BE-11) also returned to Cozumel, she is the sister ship to theARM Cuauhtémoc.   The Esmeralda (BE-43), the 61-year old Chilean ship was next to arrive.  This is her second visit to Cozumel in less than a year.   The youngest tall ship to arrive was the Brazilian Navy’s Cisne Branco, which is only 15 years old.  Also on hand was the Argentinian ARA Libertad (Q-2) which is one of the largest and fastest tall ships in the world and the holder of several speed records.

Many of theTall Ships are en route to a Tall Ship Regatta which will be held in Vera Cruz later this summer.
