What is Trendy?

trend·y

ˈtrendē/

informal

adjective

  1. 1.Magic_Design1

very fashionable or up to date in style or influence.

I had a client a few years back who asked me to decorate her condo “trendy.” Everything she asked for just seemed foreign to me – white vinyl sofas, a breakfast bar instead of a dining table and chairs. It seemed like she was just trying too hard. Her original décor was all rustic furniture, so this was a real change. But I had hoped for something somewhere in the middle. I realized something as well, that even though trendy does exist, a person’s unique and individual style must be included in the look. In the process of wanting to be so hip, she lost herself in the process of design.

Her condo has since been returned to a semblance of transitional. The white vinyl sofa replaced with a soft, microfiber in a shade of gray. The breakfast bar is still there, but a few of her “trendy” accessories have broken and been replaced with some more traditional, homey items.

What is important with interior design is to have a space that says “this is me”, say it in a soft voice. Work with colors you like, add some pieces that make you feel happy and then find that one trendy piece your significant other would love and put that in a special place.

Remember trendy lasts two minutes, but traditional and transitional last a lifetime.

adjetivo
