Meet the Cozumel4You Admin Team: Kathy Watts
Editors Note: Now that Cozumel 4 You is nearing it’s 10th year, we thought we’d take a moment, and introduce you to the hard-working administrator staff, who monitor the Cozumel 4 You Facebook group. We’ve asked them a series of questions, in the hope that readers would have the opportunity to get to know them better.
Kathy Watts How long have you lived on the island?
After my first life changing visit in 1990, I began my life in earnest here in 1996, so its been about 23 years. My first blissful years were spent in a whirlwind of sun lotion scented days, and all night bar hopping and dancing. That eventually evolved into an adorable apartment in Corpus where I spent 7 wonderful years. I found the perfect little house, and over the past decade or so I’ve dabbled in Real Estate, restaurant projects, and now I am having the best time ever with Patio Cakes and Desserts. All the while I have been a Flight Attendant for Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines (post merger).
What made you choose Cozumel?
It’s just an indescribable connection. When you have it you know what I mean. If you don’t I cannot describe it, but its the difference between life in black and white and life in full Technicolor. When you find your place on the planet like that, I believe you can move heaven and earth to stay there. If I can do it, anyone can. Whats one of your favorite things about island life? For me there is a sense of community with a strong undercurrent of stewardship of this place, and a certain reverence many of us feel about the lives and relationships we’ve built here. There is definitely a sense of gratitude and a beating heart of philanthropy that really defines how special it is to live here – at least I feel that way and I think others may be able to relate to those feelings. After so many years here there is a patina that colors my memories of friends and family that are no longer here, nostalgic memories of favorite restaurants and businesses, bars ands clubs that housed the best years of my life. I still see the old Cozumel when I am driving and remember this place used to be that, or this is where that crazy thing happened, so and so used to live here. Mostly I am happy to live in a place where the people are generally just so NICE. People are helpful and friendly. If you look for the bad you can find it of course, but there is so much good in this community – It’s very special.
Can you tell us a little about your personal life? I grew up in St.Paul, Minnesota, the youngest of 6 kids in a tiny house. My youth was filled with lakes, pine woods, frogs, turtles, dirt bikes, ice skating, and snow. I am eternally grateful for that.
Are you married?
I am happily single. My joke is that my ideal man is hilarious, tall, handsome, self sufficient, kind, lives at least 1000 miles away, and doesn’t really want a full time girlfriend. If you know that guy feel free to PM me. Do you have children? I have one amazing daughter currently in Colorado. She was 12 when we first visited the island together and she’s lived on Cozumel on and off since graduating college. She shares my love for Mexico in general, and is better traveled than I when it comes to visiting other states in this beautiful country. I also have 2 Chihuahuas, Jimmy and Stella, that are the lights of my life and boss me around 24 hours a day. They prefer me to stay home and I do my best to oblige. Someday I will make a better effort to travel other parts of the country and the globe. With my Flight Attendant career I have learned to appreciate being home reveling in the mundane.
Kathy Watts What does your family think of your decision?
They have enjoyed visiting and being a part of my life here. I am so lucky to have 2 sisters that are my best friends. One has a house 2 doors down from me here in Cozumel, and the other I see all the time when I am in my hometown of Minneapolis Minnesota for work. I first came to the island led by my sister Sue, and I found the house I bought thanks to my sister Dee who had just purchased the house on the corner from me in 2000. I followed and bought mine in 2001. I have wonderful years of friendship with so many people that live and visit Cozumel. Its enjoyable to meet their families – you really get to know the whole family because so many of their relatives and friends come to visit. I also have 2 fine brothers, one of whom has visited a few times, and the other hasn’t been yet.
What do you do for a living on the island? I am a flight attendant for Delta Airlines, and I have a little side hustle by the name of Patio Cakes and Desserts. I enjoy it like crazy. Tell us of your business? It’s really a baking obsession that I didn’t know I had until my daughter and I started a little lunch business together years ago called Cha Cha’s Kitchen. We made cakes for the dessert slot on our menu, and people started ordering whole cakes for birthdays and special occasions. After we shut down to start her own endeavors, I kept the baking side of the business at home and Patio Cakes was born in 2016. I figure I’ll retire when I run out of sprinkles – current estimate for that is well into 2040.
What’s your favorite administrator moment?
The overwhelming response when my dog got out and went missing. It was the most terrifying, and then the most gut wrenching sense of relief and gratitude I’ve ever felt. When it comes right down to it that is the power of a healthy community. Cozumel 4 You has built a community based on positivity and thoughtful moderating. I like when members post positive reviews and great information. Recovered animals and returned wallets are among my most favorites posts. There are plenty of other outlets available online to vent frustrations and spam, I am glad that C4Y is not among them. Its not a free for all, its a group with rules for posting that 99% of the members appreciate. I made that statistic up but I think its a good guess.
If someone where considering moving to the island what advice would you give them?
Introduce yourself on Cozumel 4 You! Get involved, help out a good cause, learn some Spanish. Relax and don’t take anything too seriously. Go with the flow. No place is perfect. If you see a need to be filled don’t complain, dig in with your own two hands and get involved. Give back whenever you can with whatever talents you possess. You’ll meet great people and form relationships that enhance your experience.

Después de la primera visita que cambió mi vida en el año 1990, formalmente comencé mi vida aquí en 1996. Así que son alrededor de 23 años. Encontré una casita perfecta, y desde hace poco más de una década he incursionado en bienes raíces, proyectos de restaurantes y ahora vivo el mejor momento con Patio Cakes and Desserts. Durante todo este tiempo he sido azafata para las aerolíneas Northwest y Delta (después de la fusión).
¿Qué te motivó a elegir Cozumel?
Es una conexión indescriptible. Cuando se tiene, ustedes saben a lo que me refiero. Si no tienen esa conexión, no me es posible describirla pero es la diferencia entre la vida en colores blanco y negro, y la vida en total tecnicolor. Cuando uno encuentra un sitio así en el planeta, creo que uno mueve cielo y tierra para permanecer ahí. Si yo pude, cualquier persona puede hacerlo también.
¿Cuál es una de tus cosas favoritas de la Isla?
Para mi es esa sensación de comunidad con un fuerte trasfondo de protección de este lugar, y una cierta reverencia que muchos sentimos hacia las vidas y relaciones que hemos desarrollado aquí. Definitivamente existe ese sentido de agradecimiento y un corazón latiente hacia la filantropía que define lo especial que es vivir aquí. Al menos así me siento y y creo que otros pueden identificarse con esos sentimientos. Después de tantos años aquí, existe una pátina que colorea mis recuerdos con amigos y familia que ya no están aquí; recuerdos nostálgicos de restaurantes y comercios favoritos, de bares y clubes que albergaron los mejores años de mi vida. Aún veo el antiguo Cozumel cuando voy conduciendo, y recuerdo que este lugar solía ser aquello, o que este es donde sucedió esa situación loca; tal y tal vivían en ese lugar. En gran parte soy feliz de vivir en un lugar donde la gente en general es tan AGRADABLE. La gente es servicial y amigable. Cuando se busca lo malo, claro que se encuentra, pero existe tanto bien en esta comunidad; es muy especial.
¿Puedes contarnos algo acerca de tu vida personal?
Crecí en St. Paul, Minnesota. Soy la más pequeña de 6 hermanos en una casa pequeña. Mi infancia estuvo llena de lagos, bosques de pinos, ranas, tortugas, motos tipo enduro, patinaje sobre hielo y nieve. Estoy eternamente agradecida por ello.
¿Eres casada?
Soy felizmente soltera. Suelo bromear diciendo que mi hombre ideal es muy divertido, alto, guapo, autosuficiente, amable, vive por lo menos a 1000 millas de distancia, y en realidad no desea una novia tiempo completo. Si conocen a ese tipo, por favor envíenme un mensaje privado. ¿Tienes hijos? Tengo una hija increíble que actualmente vive en Colorado. Ella tenía 12 años cuando ambas visitamos la Isla por primera ocasión, y ha vivido en Cozumel por periodos desde que se graduó de la institución de educación superior. En general comparte mi amor por México, y cuando se trata de visitar los demás estados en este bello país, ella ha viajado más. También tengo 2 perros Chihuahua, Jimmy y Stela, que son la luz de mi vida y me dan órdenes las 24 horas del día. Prefieren que me quede en casa y procuro hacer todo para complacerlos. Algún día haré el esfuerzo de viajar a otras partes del pañis y del mundo. Con mi carrera de azafata he aprendido a apreciar quedarme en casa disfrutando de lo mundano.
Kathy Watts, ¿qué piensa tu familia acerca de tu decisión?
Han disfrutado venir de visita y ser parte de mi vida aquí. Tengo la fortuna de tener 2 hermanas que son mis mejores amigas. La casa de una esta a 2 casas de la mía aquí en Cozumel, y a la otra la veo todo el tiempo cuando por cuestiones de trabajo me encuentro en mi ciudad natal de Minneapolis, Minnesota. La primera vez que vine a al Isla me trajo mi hermana Sue, y encontré la casa que adquirí gracias a mi hermana Dee quien en el año 2000 recién había comprado la casa de la esquina. Yo compré la mía en el 2001. Tengo muchos años maravillosos de amistad con mucha gente que vive en Cozumel y con quienes vienen de visita. Es un placer conocer a sus familias. Uno realmente llega a conocer a toda la familia ya que muchos de sus familiares y amigos también vienen a visitar. También tengo 2 hermanos magníficos; uno de ellos ha venido de visita en diversas ocasiones, y el otro aún no lo hace.
¿A qué te dedicas en la Isla?
Trabajo como azafata en la aerolínea Delta, y tengo un negocio paralelo que se llama Patio Cakes and Desserts. Me encanta la locura.
¿Cuéntanos acerca de tu negocio?
En realidad es una obsesión por la repostería que desconocía tener hasta que hace unos años mi hija y yo comenzamos un pequeño negocio de comida llamado Cha Cha’s Kitchen. Preparábamos pasteles para la sección de postres de nuestro menú, y la gente comenzó a ordenar pasteles para cumpleaños y ocasiones especiales. Después de que cerramos para que ella se dedicara a sus propias actividades, continué con la parte de repostería del negocio. Así nació Patio Cakes en 2016. Supongo que me retiraré cuando se me acaben los granulitos para espolvorear. Mi cálculo actual es que esto sucederá bien entrado el 2040.
¿Cuál es tu momento favorito como administrador?
La inmensa respuesta cuando mi perro se salió y se extravió. Fue espantoso, y después la más desgarradora sensación de alivio y agradecimiento que hubiera sentido. Al final ese es el poder de una comunidad sana. Cozumel 4 You ha edificado una comunidad basada en la moderación positiva y considerada. Me gusta cuando los miembros publican cometarios positivos y buena información. La recuperación de animales y carteras devueltas a sus dueños forman parte de mis publicaciones favoritas. En línea hay muchos otros sitios disponibles donde la gente puede desahogar sus frustraciones y bombardear con publicidad. Me da gusto que C4Y no está entre éstos. No es un sitio libre para las batallas campales. Es un grupo que tiene reglas para publicar y 99% de los miembros lo agradecen. Inventé esa estadística, pero creo que es una buena estimación.
Si alguien está considerando mudarse a la Isla, ¿qué le recomendarías?
Preséntense en Cozumel 4 You. Participen, ayuden en una buena causa, aprendan algo de español. Relájense, no tomen las cosas muy en serio. Déjense llevar por la corriente. Ningún sitio es perfecto. Si ven que se requiere llenar una necesidad, no se quejen, caven con ambas manos y participen. Retribuyan cuando puedan, con cualquier talento que posean. Conocerán a personas grandiosas y formarán relaciones que aumentarán su experiencia.

Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan. Convenciendo a sus padres que pagaran una elegante universidad privada, obtuvo su título en Periodismo y Laura crea semanalmente Cozumel 4You, medios sociales y artículos promocionales sobre la Isla y también es moderadora en el grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook que actualmente cuenta con 25,000 miembros. Fabián, s umuy tolerante marido, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, pues se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
