A Real Cozumel Love Story by Laura Palmer Harris
I’ve heard many people say they’re in love with Cozumel, and find the island to be a special place. For my husband Michael and I this is especially true since we actually met and fell in love on Cozumel, and then got married six years later in the exact spot where we met. Here’s our Cozumel love story:
On October 16th, 2010 I first met Michael as he helped me onto the dive boat (Yucab) from the pier at Secrets Resort. As soon as our hands touched there were fireworks. We dove all week together and the chemistry was so strong.
Michael was staying at Hotel Cozumel. Several friends and I were staying at Residencias Reef at a dear friend’s fabulous rental condo. Michael had dinner with us every night and toured around the island with us all week, including a really fun time at Coconuts.
After the end of the week, Michael returned home to Texas and I went back to Atlanta, where I lived. We kept in touch for 2 ½ years. We finally got to see each other again on Memorial Day weekend 2013 and it was fireworks all over again. We dated for 8 months long distance and he joined me and moved to Atlanta
When we returned to Secrets for a friend’s wedding at Isla Passion we seriously began discussing getting married. We really wanted to get married on that Secrets pier where we first met. Michael’s job sent him to Belgium for a month and the very first day I went to visit him there, he proposed, it was bliss.
We were engaged for 2 years and planned our amazing wedding wih Pati Gomez at Secrets Resort. She – and the staff – made everything so perfect. We married on the pier on May 7, 2016.
We had 75 people come to Cozumel for our wedding. I requested everyone wear yellow turquoise and orange the colors of ocean at sunset.
Since the whole gang was there for the wedding, we had team relays on Cinco de Mayo: Team Michael vs. Team Laura. Hilarity ensued since the relay consisted of the 1st person using hula with a mask, the 2nd person had to run with beachball between their legs, the 3rd had to crabwalk on beach while wearing a sombrero, the last person had to do a flamingo beer bong. Team Michael won the first leg because they went out fishing while Team Laura went shopping in town and to Senor Frogs for yards of margaritas.
We return to Cozumel – and Secrets – every year for our anniversary. Due to COVID we couldn’t come in May, but we did make it for October 16th to celebrate our love. That’s the anniversary of the first time we met on the Secrets pier.
The pier is now gone, due to damage from Hurricane Delta. I actually collected a few pieces of the pier so we’d have a memento of both our meeting and our fabulous wedding. We have no doubt that the wonderful people on this island, and the staff at Secrets will rebuild a new and even better pier.
We will continue to come to our second home to see all of our wonderful friends (who are now like family) here in Cozumel. We have met some amazing people on the island that have become our family. Pati Gomez, our wedding coordinator and her beautiful daughter Tutu, Julio Kin for scuba, (we even have the same birthday) ,Taz Mirada for tours, Randy Mirada who used to work at the resort but now is a wonderful cobbler (thanks for the lovely lunch at your family home) and of course Ed and Laurie, who’s condo we rented our very first visit.
Before this year’s Cozumel visit I told our vet we were going and asked for anything she could spare to donate to the Humane Society of Cozumel Island. It hit a special place her heart, since after Dr Ellington graduated veterinary school, she lived and worked in Mexico for 2 years, doing spay and neuter campaigns.
Since she had all of that “back of a truck, spay” and “using an old ironing board as an operating table” experience, Dr. Ellington was more than happy to help the animals in Cozumel. I brought all the supplies I could down to donate to the HSCI. They were thrilled and felt so rewarding to help the sweet pups and kitties.
We love Cozumel and everyone here. We urge you all to stay strong through these tough times. Michael and I will continue to come, share our love and cherish the relationships with so many people here on the island.

He escuchado a muchas personas decir que están enamorados de Cozumel y encuentran que la Isla es un lugar especial. Para mi esposo Michael y para mi, esto es especialmente cierto ya que, de hecho, nos conocimos y nos enamoramos en Cozumel; y contrajimos matrimonio seis años después en el mismo lugar donde nos conocimos Esta es nuestra historia de amor en Cozumel:
El 16 de octubre de2010conocía a Michael mientras me ayudaba a subir al barco de buceo (Yucab) desde el muelle en Secrets Resort. Tan pronto como nuestras manos se tocaron, hubo fuegos artificiales. Practicamos buceo juntos durante toda la semana y la química era muy intensa.
Michael se hospedaba en el Hotel Cozumel. Varios amigos y yo nos hospedábamos en Residencias Reef, en el fabuloso condominio de alquiler de un amigo. Michael y yo cenábamos con nosotros todas las noches; además, durante toda la semana nos acompañó a recorrer la Isla, incluyendo un momento muy divertido en Coconuts.
Al finalizar la semana, Michael regresó a su casa en Texas, y yo a Atlanta, donde vivía. Nos mantuvimos en contacto durante 2 ½ años. Finalmente logramos vernos de nuevo el fin de semana de Conmemoración de los Caídos en Batalla (“Memorial Day”) en 2013, y de nuevo hubo fuegos artificiales. Mantuvimos una relación a distancia durante 8 meses y luego se mudó a Atlanta conmigo.
Cuando regresamos a Secrets Resorts para la boda de un amigo en la Isla de la Pasión, platicamos seriamente el tema de casarnos. Debido a su trabajo, Michael se fue a Bélgica por el lapso de un mes y el primer día que fui a visitarlo, me propuso matrimonio; fue una gran dicha.
Estuvimos comprometidos durante 2 años y planeamos nuestra increíble boda con Pati Gómez en Secrets Resorts. Ella y el personal hicieron que todo fuera perfecto. Nos casamos en el muelle el 7 de mayo de 2016.
Para nuestra boda logramos que nos acompañaran 75 personas. Pedí a todos que se vistieran con ropa de colores amarillo, turquesa y naranja, los colores del mar al atardecer.
Ya que toda la banda estaba ahí para la boda, hicimos un juego de relevos el cinco de mayo: el equipo Michael contra el equipo Laura. Las carcajadas estaban a la orden del día pues el relevo consistió en que a primera persona debía usar una hula con una máscara; la segunda persona debía correr con una pelota de playa entre las piernas, y la tercera debía caminar como cangrejo en la playa mientras usaba sombrero. La última persona tenía que tomar cerveza de un bong en forma de flamenco. El equipo Michael ganó la primera etapa pues salieron a pescar en tanto que el equipo de Laura fue de compras al pueblo y al Señor Frogs por yardas de margaritas.
Todos los años regresamos a Cozumel y al Secrets para celebrar nuestro aniversario. Debido al COVID no pudimos hacerlo en mayo, pero sí el 16 de octubre para celebrar nuestro amor. Ese es el aniversario de la fecha que nos conocimos en el muelle del Secrets.
El muelle desapareció debido a los daños causados por el huracán Delta. De hecho, recogí algunos trozos del muelle para tener un recuerdo de nuestro encuentro y de nuestra fabulosa boda. No tenemos ninguna duda de que la maravillosa gente de esta Isla y el personal de Secrets reconstruirán un muelle nuevo y aún mejor.
Continuaremos regresando a nuestro segundo hogar para ver a todos nuestros amigos maravillosos (que ahora son como familia) aquí en Cozumel. Hemos conocido gente increíble en la Isla, quienes se han convertido en nuestra familia. Pati Gómez y su bella hija Tutu. Julio Kin en el buceo (incluso cumplimos años el mismo día). Taz Miranda para los tours; Randy Mirada que solía trabajar en el hotel y ahora es un zapatero magnifico (gracias por el encantador almuerzo en casa de su familia); y, claro está. Ed y Laurie cuyo condominio rentamos en nuestra primera visita
Antes de visitar Cozumel este año, le comentamos a la veterinaria sobre la visita y le pedí que si podía donar cualquier cosa a la Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel. Esto llegó a un sitio muy especial en su corazón, pues después de que la Dra. Ellington se graduó de la escuela veterinaria, durante dos años vivió y trabajó en México haciendo campañas de esterilización y castración.
Ya que contaba con toda esa experiencia de “esterilizar en la parte trasera de una camioneta” y “usar como mesa de operaciones, un burro para planchar”, la Dra. Ellington estaba más que feliz de ayudar a los animales en Cozumel. Traje todos materiales que me fue posible, para donarlos a la Sociedad Humanitaria de la Isla de Cozumel. Estaban muy emocionados y satisfechos de poder ayudar a los tiernos cachorros y gatitos.
Amamos Cozumel y a todos los que están aquí. Pedimos a todos que se mantengan fuertes en estos tiempos difíciles. Michael y yo seguiremos viniendo, compartiendo nuestro amor y apreciando las relaciones que hemos hecho con tanta gente aquí en la Isla.

Una ex yanqui de Connecticut quien llama hogar a Cozumel desde hace más de 15 años. Laura escapó al Caribe hace años, desplazándose de una isla a otra dando clases de BUCEO. Se dedicó a perder el tiempo en Jamaica y finalmente se detuvo en Cozumel para pasar unas vacaciones de 2 semanas que aún no terminan. Convenciendo a sus padres que pagaran una elegante universidad privada, obtuvo su título en Periodismo y Laura crea semanalmente Cozumel 4You, medios sociales y artículos promocionales sobre la Isla y también es moderadora en el grupo Cozumel 4 You en Facebook que actualmente cuenta con 25,000 miembros. Fabián, s umuy tolerante marido, desde hace mucho tiempo se resignó a no tener vida privada, pues se ha visto implicado en los diversos proyectos y planes que urde Laura. Son orgullosos padres de diversos perros y gatos rescatados. Mientras contempla su paso a través de la vida en el Caribe mexicano,Laura continúa siendo la pesadilla en la existencia de su muy tradicional suegra mexicana.
