Agreement between Cozumel and UNESCO
Cozumel, November 2022. After negotiations and signing of an agreement between the mayor of Cozumel, Juanita Alonso Marrufo and the representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Frédéric Vacheron, it was revealed that the Island will shortly have a new underwater park, which will be added to the tourist attractions this destination has to offer.
These actions are in line with the interest the mayor of Cozumel has in joining efforts with UNESCO to strengthen the Island as a paradise destination, with sustainable tourism, hence signed a collaboration agreement for the exchange and creation of public policies and tourism programs that operate based on cultural diversity and human rights, so that visitors may be able to enjoy the cultural and natural wealth, while preserving the balance with the environment.
In this regard, the mayor stressed that “Cozumel is not only a sun and beach destination, but we are also much more; a place of culture, with many traditions and customs, and that is precisely what we want to highlight and share with our visitors,” she said.
Signing the agreement formalized the joint efforts that will involve training and exchange of practices, so that the municipality can strengthen its capacity to protect the intangible cultural heritage, build a creative and inclusive economy, protect the underwater heritage, and consolidate the sustainable use of biodiversity with the participation of all sectors in the Island.
Likewise, it will be possible to identify, value, protect, promote, manage, and safeguard the heritage and diversity of cultural expressions in accordance with the 2030 Agenda, and thus be able to strengthen a responsible tourism for its inhabitants, natural and creative resources, and territory.
It is important to highlight that the Island of Cozumel belongs to the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve as the only reserve with a population center that coexists in a protected natural environment, with one of the most diverse seabed in the world as it belongs to the second largest barrier reef on the planet, the Mesoamerican, which is visited daily by thousands of tourists who enjoy watching over 1,100 marine species that inhabit it.
It was reported that in the coming months, Cozumel’s new underwater park will mark the beginning of a series of training sessions, followed by an event on underwater heritage and the work carried out on the Island by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
The goal is to make the destination not only a sun and beach attraction, but also a cultural and natural one, and for this UNESCO Mexico has identified multiple areas of opportunity to which full attention could be given, such as the 40 Mayan archaeological sites, handicrafts made with marine materials, wood carving, handcrafted jewelry, traditions and expressions, festive events such as El Cedral, as well as others in different segments which could be taken advantage of through this agreement.

Cozumel, noviembre de 2022. Luego de las gestiones y la firma de un convenio entre la presidenta municipal de Cozumel, Juanita Alonso Marrufo y el representante de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Cultura y la Ciencia (UNESCO), Frédéric Vacheron, se anunció que muy pronto la Isla tendrá un nuevo parque subacuático, mismo que vendrá a sumarse a la oferta turística que ofrece este destino turístico.
Dichas acciones corresponden al interés de la edil cozumeleña de unir esfuerzos con la UNESCO para consolidar a la entidad como un destino paradisiaco, con turismo sustentable y sostenible, por ello, signó un convenio de colaboración para el intercambio y creación de políticas públicas y programas de turismo que operen desde la diversidad cultural y los derechos humanos, a fin de que los visitantes disfruten de las riquezas culturales y naturales, manteniendo el equilibrio con el medio ambiente.
En este sentido la munícipe destacó que “Cozumel no es únicamente un destino de sol y playa, somos mucho más, un lugar con cultura, muchas tradiciones y costumbres, y es precisamente lo que queremos resaltar y compartir con los visitantes”, dijo.
Con la signatura del convenio se formalizó la unión de esfuerzos que consistirá en capacitaciones e intercambio de prácticas, para que el municipio fortalezca sus capacidades de proteger el patrimonio cultural inmaterial, crear una economía creativa e inclusiva, proteger la herencia subacuática y consolidar el uso sostenible de la biodiversidad con la participación de todos los sectores de la isla.
Asimismo, se podrá identificar, valorar, proteger, promover, gestionar y salvaguardar el patrimonio y la diversidad de las expresiones culturales de acuerdo a la Agenda 2030, y así consolidar un turismo responsable para con sus habitantes, recursos naturales, creativos y territorio.
Es importante destacar que la Isla de Cozumel pertenece a la Reserva de la Biosfera de la UNESCO, siendo la única reserva que cuenta con un núcleo poblacional que coexiste en un entorno natural protegido, con uno de los fondos marinos más diversos del mundo al pertenecer a la segunda barrera de arrecife más grande del planeta, la Mesoamericana, la cual diariamente es visitada por miles de turistas que disfrutan admirar las más de mil 100 especies marinas que la habitan.
Trascendió, que el nuevo parque subacuático de Cozumel marcará el inicio de una serie de capacitaciones en los próximos meses, seguido por un evento sobre el patrimonio subacuático, y los trabajos realizados en la isla por el Instituto nacional de antropología e historia (INAH).
El objetivo es que el destino no solo sea un atractivo de sol y playa, sino cultural y natural, y para ello la UNESCO México ha identificado múltiples áreas de oportunidad a las que se les podría destinar toda la atención, como el caso de 40 sitios arqueológicos mayas, artesanías con materiales marinos, tallado de madera, joyería artesanal, tradiciones y expresiones, actos festivos como El Cedral, así como otras experiencias de diversos sectores que podrían ser aprovechadas a través de este convenio.
