Well, that’s fine if it feeds you right away, but if it’s just taunting you by holding the food so close you can see it but can’t reach it, you should just peck the shit out of that hand until it drops the food.

Henrietta is a hen in Cozumel who dispenses somewhat toxic “Pro Tips” on marriage and other subjects to give people a chuckle and to show how chickens are full of personality.
Henrietta was an unwanted game fowl hen before her recent rise to mini celebrity. A breeder of fighting roosters on the island didn’t want her because these hens have enormous appetites and cost a lot to feed. Plus, they don’t lay a lot of eggs like conventional hens, and they are too skinny to bother making a meal out of. And if game hens don’t have the desired “bloodline” to produce roosters that can win at cockfighting, they are considered even more useless.
So, I adopted Henrietta as a companion for my rooster Henley Xochipilli, who I adopted from a different breeder of fighting roosters on the island more than a year ago. Henley was blind in one eye from a cockfight, and had been mutilated. His comb had been cut off with scissors, along with part of his wattles (as is standard practice in cockfighting). He had been kept in a small cage on the second floor of a house for the first three years of his life, so he wasn’t used to walking around or even to being outside. He just stood quietly in one place for hours without moving when I first got him. Gradually he came out of his shell, but he’s still the sweet introvert of the family.

And then came Henrietta—this spicy, confident, energetic young thing fresh off a farm. She took an immediate liking to Henley—who was the equivalent of a 40-year old virgin—and chased him around while he did everything possible to avoid her. But she was relentless, and he finally succumbed to her pressure—ahem, charms. Now they are inseparable, and they spend their days snacking, sunbathing, snuggling, and spending time at the beach. Their honeymoon video at the beach sharing some chips and salsa with a sunset in the background remains one of my favorites (This is Henley’s version, and this is Henrietta’s toxic pro tip version).

Henrietta is determined to live her best life, and she knows exactly what she wants, so it came as a very spontaneous but natural step to give her an online platform for her to start giving advice to others on how to live. Every day people tell me that she makes them laugh. But Henrietta is the one who is really having the last laugh—she’s now a mini star who enjoys more popularity than the guy who deemed her to be a “useless hen.’’

Henrietta es una gallina de Cozumel que ofrece “consejos profesionales” un tanto tóxicos sobre el matrimonio y otros temas que hacen reír a la gente, demostrando que las gallinas tienen una gran personalidad.
Antes de su reciente ascenso a mini celebridad, Henrietta era una gallina de plea, que no era deseada. Un criador de gallos de pelea en la Isla no la quería porque las gallinas tienen un apetito enorme y cuesta mucho alimentarlas. Además, a diferencia de las gallinas convencionales, no ponen muchos huevos y son demasiado flacas para prepararlas en una comida. Y si las gallinas de pelea no tienen el “linaje” para producir gallos que puedan ganar en las peleas, entonces se les considera aún más inútiles.

criador de gallos de pelea de la Isla. Henley estaba ciego de un ojo a causa de una pelea de gallos, y lo habían mutilado. La cresta la habían cortado con tijeras, junto con parte de sus barbas (una práctica común en las peleas de gallos). Durante los tres primeros años de su vida estuvo en una pequeña jaula, en el segundo piso de una casa por lo que no estaba acostumbrado a caminar o a estar en el exterior. Cuando lo recibí se quedó quieto durante horas en un mismo lugar, sin moverse. Poco a poco fue saliendo de su coraza, y sigue siendo el dulce e introvertido de la familia.
Y entonces llegó Henrietta; una joven picante, segura de sí misma y llena de energía, recién salida de la granja. De inmediato se encariñó de Henley, quien era el equivalente de un hombre virgen de 40 años, y lo persiguió mientras él hacía todo lo posible por evitarla. Ella fue implacable hasta que él sucumbió a la presión, o sea, a sus encantos. Ahora son inseparables y la pasan los días comiendo bocadillos, tomando el sol, acurrucándose y disfrutando el tiempo en la playa. El video de su luna de miel en la playa compartiendo unas papas fritas y salsa con la puesta de sol de fondo, sigue siendo uno de mis favoritos. (Esta es la versión de Henley, y esta es la versión de positivismo tóxico de Henrietta).
Henrietta está decidida a vivir su mejor vida, y sabe exactamente lo que quiere, así que darle una plataforma en línea fue un paso espontáneo y natural para que ella empezara a dar consejos a los demás de cómo vivir. Todos los días la gente me dice que ella les hace reír; pero en realidad que la ríe al final es Henrietta. Ahora es una mini estrella que goza de más popularidad que el tipo que la consideró una “gallina inútil”.
