Would you like to learn how to make an artistic catrina and learn more about its history and origin? At Cozumel 4 you we share the following information with you:
La Catrina is a character created by the Mexican painter, illustrator and caricaturist from Aguascalientes, José Guadalupe Posada. La Catrina is the figure most associated with the Day of the Dead and death in general in Mexico; its history dates back to 1910.
Currently, its representations and variations are a fundamental part of Mexican culture and identity, and its representations are manifested in various artistic expressions such as painting, makeup, sculpture, photography, narrative, etc.
Over time, the figure of La Catrina endured as a symbol of protest and since then it has been added to the “Day of the Dead” festivities on altars while many dress as catrinas and catrines.
In an interview for Cozumel4you we were able to talk with Pilar Bañuelos, visual artist and sculptor, who will offer an artistic workshop on making catrinas. The workshop will take place on October 7, 14 and 21:
“This workshop will be focused on creating a catrina in 3 sessions of two hours each. The idea of making catrinas comes from a project started during the pandemic called “made of paper.”
“The idea is to create the catrina’s torso so that it can fit into a bottle, so that we can make it with reused material such as the same bottle and paper mache”
Although the work to be done requires a certain level of artistic skill, everyone can participate:
“You can start from scratch, you just need a little manual skill. It is an artistic piece, made of paper. The intention is to create the piece with a wire structure, respecting the anatomy as much as possible and emphasizing the proportions of Catrina’s hand. It is meticulous work and it is important to pay attention to creating a detailed hand.”
The workshop not only focuses on the creation of the artistic piece, but also shares information about the origins of the catrina and the historical development of the character, which is an excellent cultural complement to the activity:
“The idea is also to promote culture and make real information about the origin of the catrina available to people.”
Pilar Bañuelos is a graduate of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and has dedicated a large part of her career to sculpture. She has been residing on the island of Cozumel for several years.

La Catrina es un personaje creado por el pintor, ilustrador y caricaturista mexicano de Aguascalientes, José Guadalupe Posada. La Catrina es la figura que más se asocia al Día de Muertos y a la muerte en general en México, su historia se remonta al año de 1910.
Actualmente sus representaciones y variaciones forman parte fundamental de la cultura e identidad mexicana, y sus representaciones se manifiestan en diversas expresiones de artísticas como la pintura, el maquillaje, la escultura, la fotografía, la narrativa, etc.
A través del tiempo, la figura de La Catrina perduró como símbolo de protesta y desde entonces se agrega a las fiestas de “Día de Muertos” en altares mientras muchos se visten de catrinas y catrines.
En entrevista para Cozumel4you pudimos platicar con Pilar Bañuelos, Artista visual y escultora, quien ofrecerá un taller artístico de elaboración de catrinas el taller se realizará los días 7, 14 y 21 de octubre:
“Este taller va a ser enfocado en crear una catrina en 3 sesiones de dos horas cada una. La idea de hacer catrinas sale de un proyecto iniciado en pandemia llamado “hecho de papel”.
“La idea es crear el torso de la catrina para que pueda entrar en una botella, para que podamos hacerla con material reutilizado como la misma botella y el papel mache”
Si ben el trabajo a realizar requiere cierto nivel de habilidad artística, todos pueden participar:
“Se puede iniciar desde cero, solo se necesita un poco de habilidad manual. Es una pieza artística, hecha de papel. La intención es crear la pieza con una estructura de alambre, respetando lo más posible la anatomía y haciendo énfasis en las proporciones de la mano de la Catrina. Es un trabajo minucioso y es importante ponerle atención a la creación de una mano detallada.”
El taller no solo se enfoca a la elaboración de la pieza artística, sino que también se comparte información sobre los orígenes de la catrina y el desarrollo histórico del personaje, lo cual es un excelente complemento cultural para la actividad:
“La idea también es fomentar la cultura y poner al alcance de la gente la información real del origen de la catrina.”
Pilar Bañuelos es egresada de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y ha dedicado gran parte de su trayectoria a la escultura. Lleva varios años residiendo en la isla de Cozumel.
