COZUMEL, May 2021. –  For the first time ever the Cozumel International Airport (AIC) a weekly flight from Los Angeles, California will be arriving, starting this Saturday May 8, with United Airlines.

Jorge Romero Campos, the airport terminal administrator, confirmed what he had previously reported about receiving the slot request from United Airlines who is expanding its coverage with different counties in the United States.

The Boeing 739/900 flight 2460/2061, with a 159-passenger capacity, is expected to arrive this Saturday, April 8. It is expected that the direct flight will last 4 hours and 50 minutes.

Information reports that for the time being, the weekly flight to Cozumel will arrive at 15:30 hours, departing LA at 16:50, It is expected that these flights could increase by next summer.

United Airlines will add these flights to those to and from Chicago, Houston and Denver, emphasizing that the latter will increase its flights starting Sunday, May 9th due to the fact that from having weekly flights on Saturdays three more will be added allowing connections on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays.

SARGASSUM

The amount of sargassum has doubled in the eastern coast of Cozumel which has forced Zofemat bringing in more brigade members to remove it, since from collecting seven and eight tons of sargassum daily in the past, now it has increased as much as 20 to 25 tons.

Ricardo Lezama Escalante, director of the municipal Federal Maritime Land Zone (Zofemat) office, said that they had to increase the number of people from 10 to 40 to collect all the seaweed especially due to the massive amount that has been reported.

The staff that has been collecting it had reported a daily total of 7 to 10 tons in the eastern coast. However, to date their daily report is 20 to 25 tons, particularly in the Chen Rio and Playa Bonita areas where work has intensified so that both bathers and tours may continue enjoying clean beaches.

Unlike three years ago, since the current administration began it has kept an action plan to tackle it as two months ago a massive arrival of sargassum was forecasted; therefore, they prepared themselves even with motorized equipment such as ATCs, trailers and two three-ton trucks to transport the seaweed. This helps making the collection easier transferring it the nearest dune.

It is worth mentioning that the Zofemat office in the municipality has a permanent beach cleaning program; in addition, they are controlled by a committee formed by SEMARNAT, SAT, the state government and the municipal government through Zofemat, and are seeking resources to increase the numbers in the brigades depending on the damage.
