Plant nutrition: under the Cozumel sun by the Cozumel Gardener
Vitamins , minerals , supplements and so many more things we take or apply on a daily basis to be at our peak. In fact, most of us consume a myriad of products and drugs to help us get stronger and fight off whatever bug comes our way; but what about the plants you have in your house or in your yard or garden ?
Suffering through the hot Cozumel sun all day is enough to wear down a human being imagine all the effort it takes your plants to go on day after day producing flowers or fruit or even vegetables.
Several years ago I started my own garden right here in Cozumel, all my plants were started from seed, never purchased a plant, I always considered that cheating, (lol ) and inevitably when they got big enough I wanted to, of course, give them a good fertilizer. This is where I started down the rabbit hole of plant fertilizers.
The more I read the more confused I became: NPK , 15-15-15 , chemicals I never heard of, and what was it I wanted to accomplish? Because then I would need a special mix of products, some dry and some liquid – but all had great names that inspired confidence with pictures of giant plants and flowers and vegetables right there on the bottle.
Why not just put it in my cart and wait for those results that I saw on the bottle for my plants in my own garden Just sprinkle some of this magic formula around the base of the plant and water it – which I did just that – and for the next several days I watched a plant I had cared for and grew for 30 days or more slowly die. “Why?” I asked myself, and at that moment decided to do some research to find out what I was doing wrong and how I could become more adept at fertilizing my plants. Clearly this aspect of gardening was more tricky then these manufacturers were letting on.
The fertilizer I bought in the market was a very powerful chemical fertilizer that burned the roots of my plant which killied it. While that was upsetting, what bothered me more, was that through research I learned that plants only absorb a small percentage of these chemical fertilizers and the rest washes away into our water supply – of no good use to anyone or anything – just slowly polluting everything it touches – including us.
That’s where my personal rabbit hole deepened and I slowly became more infuriated with the products I was using In my garden: there had to be a more natural way to get the results I was looking for. I was determined not only to find it, but to create it, and use it – and that’s where my journey into COZUMEL GARDENER AND VERDE PLUS began.
If wanted to create an all-natural fertilizer I needed to research how it was done – before all these chemical products came into existence. How was it done back in the day? How could I give my plants all the nutrients and minerals they needed to thrive without putting one single solitary chemical into the ground to only have it end up in our ocean?
After reading and viewing videos about the process of creating a fertilizer to maintain good plant growth I was ready to create my own and try it out. Finally he day arrived: it takes 2 weeks for my liquid fertilizer to be ready, so it was a bit of a wait for the first batch. With a certain amount of dread I applied it right onto my plants. The next day all my plants in the garden were different, reaching for the skies with a green that is rarely seen and after several days some of the more noticeable discoloring of leaves from lack of a certain nutrient started to go away as well. And no root burning or chemical waste, just a bunch of beautiful healthy plants.
Not one chemical is used in the production of VERDE PLUS. it does not harm bees or butterflies, it can be used as much as you like with no harm coming to your plants, sure it’s a little stinky but that’s nature’s way of saying its gonna work.

Last but not least we wanted to package our liquid fertilizer in containers with the least amount of environmental impact as possible, my wife, Lili, came up with the idea of using two liter bottles of soda that were discarded everywhere, so we cleaned them up and put them to use, taking plastic off our streets. Since then we have expanded the size of our containers to up to 6 liters, all reused. When our customers ask for a refill – and return the used bottle – they receive a discount for recycling their container . How cool is that ? Another small victory for our beautiful island

Todos los días tomamos o aplicamos vitaminas, minerales , suplementos y muchas otras cosas para optimizar nuestra salud. De hecho, la mayoría de nosotros consumimos un sinfín de productos y medicamentos para ayudarnos a estar más fuertes y defendernos de cualquier virus que se nos presente. Pero ¿qué pasa con las plantas que tiene en su casa o en su patio o jardín?
Tener que padecer el cálido sol de Cozumel todo el día es suficiente como para agotar a un ser humano. Ahora, imagine todo el esfuerzo que ponen sus plantas día tras día para continuar produciendo flores o frutas o incluso verduras.
Hace ya algunos años comencé mi propio jardín en Cozumel. Todas las plantas iniciaron a partir de semillas. Nunca compré una planta. Siempre he creído que eso es hacer trampa (ja ja ja), y, por supuesto, cuando crecieron bastante quise darles un buen fertilizante. Aquí es donde empecé a ahondar mucho más en el tema de fertilizantes para plantas.
Cuanto más leía, más me confundía: NPK , 15-15-15 , productos químicos de los que nunca había oído hablar, y ¿qué era lo que quería conseguir?; y entonces necesitaría una mezcla especial de productos. Algunos secos y otros líquidos. Todos tenían nombres geniales que inspiraban confianza; que, justo en el envase, mostraban imágenes de plantas, flores y verduras gigantes.
¿Por qué no ponerlo en mi carrito de compras y esperar que el resultado que aparecía en el envase se diera para las plantas en mi jardín? Sólo era cuestión de espolvorear un poco de esta fórmula mágica alrededor de la base de la planta y regarla. Eso fue precisamente lo que hice, y durante los siguientes días vi morir lentamente una planta que había cuidado y cultivado durante 30 días o más. “¿Por qué?”, me pregunté; y en ese momento decidí investigar un poco más para saber qué estaba haciendo mal y cómo podía ser más diestro en la fertilización de mis plantas. Es claro que este aspecto de la jardinería era aun más complicado de lo que decían los fabricantes.
El abono que adquirí en el mercado era un fertilizante químico muy potente que quemaba las raíces de la planta y la mataba. Si bien eso fue molesto, lo que me molestó más fue que a través de mi investigación aprendí que las plantas sólo absorben un pequeño porcentaje de estos fertilizantes químicos y el resto se filtra dentro del suministro de agua, sin que su uso sea bueno para nadie o para nada, sólo contaminando lentamente todo lo que toca, e incluyéndonos en ello.
Ahí es donde profundicé mucho más en el tema, y poco a poco me enojaban más los productos que había estado usando en mi jardín; debía existir una forma más natural de obtener los resultados que buscaba. Estaba decidido no sólo a encontrar esa forma, sino a crearla y utilizarla; y ahí es donde comenzó mi viaje hacia COZUMEL GARDENER Y VERDE PLUS.
Si mi intención era crear un fertilizante totalmente natural, era necesario investigar cómo se hacía, y que fuera anterior a la existencia de todos estos productos químicos. ¿Cómo se hacían en otros tiempos? ¿Cómo podía dar a mis plantas todos los nutrientes y minerales que necesitaban para florecer sin poner un solo producto químico en la tierra que acabara en nuestro océano?
Después de leer y ver vídeos sobre el proceso para crear un fertilizante que mantuviera el buen desarrollo de las plantas, estaba listo para crear el propio y ponerlo a prueba. Por fin llegó el día: mi abono líquido tarda dos semanas en estar listo, así que hubo que esperar un poco para obtener el primer lote. Lo apliqué con cierto temor directamente sobre mis plantas. Al día siguiente todas mis plantas en el jardín estaban diferentes, alzándose hacia cielo con un verde que rara vez se ve, y después de varios días algunas de las decoloraciones más notables de las hojas por la falta de cierto nutriente comenzaron a desaparecer también. Y no se queman las raíces y no hay residuos químicos, sólo un montón de plantas hermosas y sanas.
No se utiliza ni un solo producto químico en la producción de VERDE PLUS. No daña a las abejas ni a las mariposas, se puede utilizar tanto como se quiera sin que sus plantas sufran ningún daño. Ciertamente es un poco apestoso, pero es la forma que tiene la naturaleza de decir que va a funcionar.

Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, queríamos envasar nuestro fertilizante líquido en envases que tuvieran el menor impacto posible sobre el medio ambiente. A Lili, mi esposa, se le ocurrió usar botellas de refresco de dos litros que por todas partes se desechaban. Así que las limpiamos y les dimos buen uso, eliminando el plástico de nuestras calles. Desde entonces hemos ampliado el tamaño de nuestros envases hasta 6 litros, todos reutilizados. Cuando nuestros clientes piden una recarga -y devuelven la botella usada- reciben un descuento por reciclar su envase. ¿No es genial? Otra pequeña victoria para nuestra hermosa Isla.
